Lincoln Mark VIII Suspension Help and Common Problems
Why is a Lincoln Mark VIII Rear Shock Kit so hard to find?
The Mark VIII wasn't out all that long, so the big boys(shock manufacturers) didn't gear up for it. Unless you go to a specialty suspension company like American Air Suspension, the only place you'll find shocks for it is at the dealer. Keep in mind a single rear shock from Ford is $250+ EACH......and that does NOT include the shock mount, which is another $65!
Why do the 1993 and early 1994 Mark VIII shocks look different?
The early('93-'94) Mark VIII's utilized an anti-dive feature in the rear only. They came with an actuator mounted on top of both rear shocks which would move to the firm position and stiffen up the dampening on a panic brake situation ONLY. Mid way through the 1994 model year, I think they found out that it was redundant and the ABS did a good enough job by itself, so they canned it and never went back to it.
My Lincoln Mark VIII has a clunking noise in the rear. What is it?
The stock rear shock mounts on the Mark VIII were made with rubber. Once the rubber gets old and dry rotted, the shock stud is able to move around and make quite the racket when going over bumps.
I was once told the reason my car goes down is because the rear shocks are leaking. Would this product fix that problem?
No. If your car is leaking down, the front air struts and/or rear air springs are leaking. Some people mistakenly call the rear air springs(some call them air bags) air shocks. I can assure you the rear shocks have nothing to do with the vehicle going down.
Keep in mind the front air struts are now discontinued, so if you do luck up and find some.....expect the price to be sky high! We recommend installing a Lincoln Mark VIII Suspension Conversion Kit to be done with those problems forever. Regardless if you have air suspension or have already converted to coil springs, this kit will work with either one!
My 1993 Lincoln Mark VIII has an actuator on top. If I install this Lincoln Mark VIII Rear Shock Kit, will I get any error messages?
No, you won't get any error messages if remove the actuator from the top of the shock and tie-strap the actuator up out of the way, making sure to keep it connected to the vehicles wiring harness. As long as the actuator is allowed to move if/when it needs too, you'll never get any warning message.
Should I get Rear Shocks and mounts for my Mark VIII from Ford?
The last time we checked, the cost of the Ford factory shock mounts alone cost $65 each(if you can find them) and of course you'll need a pair. If you keep the factory mounts, then you'll need to stay with the factory shocks as well. If you can find them, expect to pay $250+ for each shock! You'll have $620 invested in shocks and mounts, as opposed to our complete Lincoln Mark VIII Rear Shock Kit that costs $125 for BOTH rear shocks and BOTH rear mounts.
Why is your Shock Kit better?
Our rear Lincoln Mark VIII Rear Shock Kit includes our Hard-Core shock mounts, which are twice as thick as our competitors! We start with a 1/4-inch steel plate, and then holes are drilled and tapped to accept hardened bolts. These are then welded so they can't pull through or turn. As far as the shocks go, we use brand name Premium shocks, unlike our competitors that use a no-name shock that's cheaply made.
Do I need to buy anything else?.....and does this do both sides?
Our Lincoln Mark VIII Rear Shock Kit includes everything you need to replace the rear shocks and mounts on a 1993-1998 Lincoln Mark VIII for BOTH sides. (only 1 kit required)
